Charles was born to Samuel De Castro and Mary Ransford was born at St George Place, St George Hanover Square in London. In 1837, his birth date was certified and registered to be legally filed. Charles Daniel De Castro was educated at private schools in England and France, and the Royal Agricultural College, Circenster.
He emigrated to New Zealand in 1853 on the ship 'Cornwall leaving London 7 April and arriving in August. Also on board the Cornwall was Constantina Salisbury. A romance blossomed and they married soon after their arrival in Wellington. They were married at St Paul's Church, Wellington on 27 August 1853 by the Rev. Samuel Poole.
Constantia was the youngest daughter of E D Salisbury, Esq, late of Middleton Tower, Lancaster.
In the same year Charles established Apsley House Academy in Wellington and was the Principal. It was at Apsley House that his wife Constantina died in child birth.
After teaching for a short time Charles moved to Porirua just north of Wellington where he took up farming. Between 1863 and 1865 he represented Wellington County in the Provincial Council.Charles was a Captain in the NZ Militia and resigned his commission in 1875. 2
In 1867 Charles become Secretary to the Colonial Commissioner of Imperial Claims. He entered the Civil Service in 1868 and was an Officer of the Government till February 1892 when he retired on a pension. Charles occupied a responsible position in Treasury having charge of the Trust and Loan account till 1872 and in that year was promoted to Chief Clerk. He held this office for many years.
In 1875 he took holy orders as a Deacon under Bishop Hadfield officiating in Wellington and Nelson. Charles was also acting Chaplain at Wellington Jail.

Married 3 times, he and his second wife Isabella (Knox) had 14 children. Three of the boys went into government service, 2 into education and government insurance departments and a 3rd as Deputy Commissioner of Stamps and Duty Registrar of the Supreme Court, Nelson.
Charles De Castro passed away age 66 and is buried on 27 June at Karori cemetery, Wellington. Amelia (Bull) de Castro was named as Executor of his Will.

Given that there are 14 children born to Charles and Isabella only the direct line to Emma Adams has been followed through Alfred Henry De Castro for now.
